    Old BadWeb data update

    Hello all,

A heads up - the old BadWeb data has arrived. It will take me a few days to verify and analyze the data. Then I can consider which approach(es) are best fit fo move forward with. My initial inclination is to post the original forum content in read-only format exactly where it was that way bookmarks and search indexes will work. Then I will explore the possibility of importing user accounts, forums and topics. It will be a little bit of time before I will know what I'm working with.

I'm liking the Thumbs Up button. Beats the "I'm with Stupid" emoji! 😁

To arrive and post here I've had to register. I would have thought BadWeB members would be able to use their existing login info. My username and email was not recognised, therefore does this mean once the old BadWeB files are running our new login is a fresh start as in our history is not linked to our new login?

Is Blake still running the show?

          Hey Rocketman,

The old software, Discusware ceased operation many, many years ago. There is no direct and easy way to export/import the users, forums, and posts.

One of my primary motivations for connecting with Blake was to preserve the decades of discussions and knowledge on BadWeb. I am working on options to import old BadWeb content. I am hopeful that the users and posts can be imported into the new forum, even if some minor fidelity is lost. If this proves not to be feasible we will move to store the old content in a permanent readable archive.

          BadWeb is still Blake's.

Thanks for the update. I'm sure there are still many old Buellers, re BadWeBers, who'd be deeply saddened to lose the more than 25 years of history. Good luck with everything. The BadWeB posting format is the best I've seen ever.

          Today's update -

Old forum content has been verified and staged on the new server. That means old content as sent by the old hosting provider is as far as I can tell is complete. I am working on the best way to permanently archive the old content such that search engine indexes and web browser bookmarks are preserved. Now that I have the content I can explore options for importing the user database, and eventually old forum posts into the new forum.

            Hello BadWebbers,

I am excited to announce that the old forum content is online to view! That means all the search engine indexes and more importantly your old bookmarks will work again. Please browse the old forums but refrain from posting (software should not allow you to post). If you manage to find a way around it understand those posts may be lost once the forum is permanently archived.

Thanks for getting that done, as has been mentioned there is a ton of good information there.
